For Children With Children

CWIN Education Sponsorship

1. BACKGROUND

CWIN believes that to get basic education is the right of every child and not a privilege. It also believes that inducing children to education is a step towards child labour elimination. Girl children, who are a neglected majority, have to be given priority in the mainstream education. With these principles, CWIN started its different education support activities for the children at risk and underprivileged children from 1988. The Education Sponsorship Programme, however, formally began from the beginning of 1992. The CWIN-ESP is committed to the cause of establishing the right to education for child workers and children living and working at difficult circumstances. Its objective is to provide education support to school aged children below the age of 10 who are working and living in most difficult circumstances. The CWIN-ESP support covers all the schooling expenses of children including tuition fees, clothes, educational materials, along with boarding expenses when necessary. By the end of 1998, 836 children are getting sponsorship in 182 schools in 23 districts.

2. FOCUS GROUPS

CWIN-ESP aims to support the following groups of deprived, underprivileged children and those at risk condition through education opportunity:

  • Homeless and destitute children
  • Street children
  • Orphaned children
  • Children from slum and squatter settlements
  • Children abandoned or neglected by parents
  • Working children
  • Children of jailed parent/s
  • Children in bondage
  • Children of scheduled caste & ethnic minority
  • Children of the rural poor families

4. TARGET

  • 100 new children in general sponsorship every year
  • Special sposnorship as per necessary

5. SPONSORSHIP CATEGORY AND AMOUNT

The education sponsorship with CWIN-ESP has two categories:

i) Special Category : US $ 600 per child per year

This sponsorship enables a child to study in a private boarding school in Kathmandu, the capital city. The expenditure covers such expenses as tuition fees, clothes, educational materials like books and stationary, and boarding (fooding and lodging). This category of sponsorship is directed to children who are at risk conditions such as destitute and homeless children, children without parents, abandoned children, children whose parents are in jail, and children in bondage and servitude.

ii) General Category: US$ 100 per child per year

This category of sponsorship provides opportunity to a child to study in a local government school all over Nepal. The government run schools normally have adopted the free education policy, but they still charge the admission fees and examination charge, and the children have to buy uniform, books, stationary and other necessary materials. These expenses are out of reach for many families in Nepal where 60% of the people survive below the poverty line. This category of sponsorship basically targets the children who are staying with parents or have possibility of staying with family and join school from home. Children from the poor neighbourhoods and shanty towns in the cities, those from rural poor families, children of the scheduled caste and minority groups and child workers can benefit from this type of sponsorship.
