Children in Armed Conflict
»
AROUND THE WORLD:
- About 300,000 child soldiers, some
as young as eight, are exploited in armed conflicts in more
than 30 countries around the world.
- More than 2 million children are
estimated to have died as a direct result of armed conflicts
over the last decade.
- At least 6 million children have
been seriously injured or permanently disabled.
- Between 8,000 and 10,000 children
continue to be killed or maimed by landmines each year.

IN NEPAL: An overview
of 11 years of armed conflict
The following are the recorded data of children
affected by Armed Conflict:

DEATH:
Over the 11 years of armed conflict
- 475 (139 girls) innocent children
have lost their lives.
During the period of January - December
2006
- Total of 40(13 girls) children
have paid the price of war by loosing their lives. Among
40 children, 26 (8 girls) children died through explosive
devices,
- 11 children (8 boys and 3 girl)
died by explosive devices, 2 children(1Boy and 1Girl) committed
to suicide when she was capture by Maoist and one boy killed
by anti rebalance group and one boy killed by Maoist as
a name of punishment of thief and one boy died by cross
fire between Maoist and civilians in current ceasefire.

INJURIES:
Over the 11 years of armed conflict
- 562 (156girls) have been physically
injured.
During the period of January
- December 2006
- Total of 88 children (22 girls)
have been injured. Among them 75 (19 girls) children were
injured through explosive devices.
- 39children (7girls) were injured
by explosive devices and one girl was injured by bullet
in current ceasefire.

ARRESTS AND CAPTURED
Over the 11 years of armed conflict
Total of 32,550 children along with teachers
have been taken away by rebel group for certain period while
254 children have been arrested by state security forces.
Most of the children were captured for the "People's
Education Training" and later released after a certain
complications.
During the period of January - December 2006
Around 1981 were have been taken away by rebel group.
During the same period, state security forces have arrested
19 children.

CHILD SEX ABUSE
- One girl committed suicide by burning
due to torture, rape by state parties.

CHILD ASSOCIATED WITH ARMED GROUP
During the period of January 2005
- December 2006
- Around 34 children (15 girls) who
were involved in Maoists activities have surrendered in
District Administration Office.
- 22 children associated with armed
group were rescued by Nepal army and have handed over to
human right organization.

IMPACT OF THE CONFLICT ON EDUCATION*
During the period of January 2005 - December
2006
- During this period, 3840 schools
were affected by armed conflict. It was recorded that 3735
schools were closed from time to time. Bunkers were built
in at least 56 schools and some of the schools that were
closed are unavailable. 32 schools were affected by bomb
explosions and at least 8 schools were destroyed by setting
fires and 3 school was affected by crossfire between conflicting
parties, 8 School are using by security force and 3 school
are affected by program in School with arms.
- Similarly, 1531 teachers were directly
affected by armed conflict in which 7 male teachers lost
their lives.
Other Information*
Over the 11 years of armed conflict
- More than 8,000 children have been orphaned.
- Around 40,000 children have been displaced
due to the armed conflict.
